Should You Take Dance Lessons Before Your Wedding?

Posted on January 27, 2026October 24, 2025 by Ralph Griggs

You’ve got the venue, the cake, the photographer—now there’s one more thing to think about: that first dance.

For some couples, the idea of dancing in front of a crowd is exciting. For others, it’s about as appealing as public speaking in a swimsuit. Either way, taking a few dance lessons before your wedding can make a big difference.

Why Dance Lessons Are Worth It

Let’s be honest—most people don’t know how to dance together anymore. You might have rhythm, but that doesn’t mean you know how to lead or follow. A few lessons can fix that fast. Here’s what you’ll get out of it:

  • Confidence: Instead of worrying about tripping over each other, you’ll actually enjoy the moment.
  • Connection: Learning to move together builds teamwork and trust—pretty symbolic for marriage, right?
  • Better photos and video: A couple that knows how to move looks relaxed and natural, which makes those first-dance photos shine.
  • Less stress: You’ll walk onto the dance floor knowing exactly what to do, not just winging it.

How Many Lessons Do You Need?

You don’t have to turn into Fred and Ginger. Most couples do just 3 to 5 lessons, enough to learn some basics and put together a simple routine. If you want a more choreographed number—something that’ll wow your guests—plan on 6 to 10 sessions.

Start at least 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding so you’re not cramming at the last minute. And wear shoes similar to what you’ll have on the big day—trust me, that matters.

What Kind of Dance?

You can go as classic or casual as you want:

  • Slow and romantic: Waltz, rumba, or foxtrot.
  • Fun and upbeat: Swing or a simple two-step.
  • Something personal: A mix of your favorite moves to a song that fits your style.

Some instructors will even help you pick a song that fits your ability level.

Final Thought

You don’t have to be a great dancer to have a great first dance. You just have to look comfortable and connected—and that comes with a little practice. Think of dance lessons as a mini date night that pays off in memories, photos, and confidence.

And who knows? You might even discover a new hobby together.
