(Hint: It’s Not the Courthouse)
One of the most common things I hear from couples is:
“We’re going to the courthouse to get our marriage license.”
đźš« Not exactly.
In Tennessee, you don’t go to the courthouse.
You go to the county clerk’s office — and there’s one in every county.
🗺️ So… Which County Clerk’s Office Do You Go To?
Any one you want. Seriously.
You don’t have to get your license in the same county where you’re getting married.
All that matters is that it’s a Tennessee marriage license — and then it’s good anywhere in the state.
- Getting married in Nashville?
But live closer to Clarksville?
âś… Get your license in Clarksville. - Live in Memphis but tying the knot in Knoxville?
âś… That works too.
It’s all legal and perfectly fine.
📌 Quick Recap:
- ❌ Not the courthouse
- ✅ Go to any Tennessee county clerk’s office
- âś… Use the license anywhere in the state
- 💡 Pick the office that’s most convenient for you
