Your Grand Entrance & Joyful Exit: A Guide to the Processional & Recessional

The processional (walking down the aisle to start) and recessional (walking back as a married couple) are more than just walking; they’re important parts of your ceremony’s flow and energy! While your wedding director is the pro at getting everyone lined up, here are some tips to help you envision and perfect these special moments.

The Processional: Setting the Scene

This is when the excitement really starts! Everyone gets settled, puts their cameras away (if we’ve made an “Unplugged Ceremony” announcement), and gets ready for you to say “I Do.”

Key Considerations:

  1. Who Walks When?
    • Officiant: Sometimes first, especially if making the Unplugged Ceremony announcement. Other times, right before or with the groom.
    • Grandparents/Parents of the Groom/Partner 1: Traditionally escorted down the aisle and seated in the front row.
    • Parents of the Bride/Partner 2: Often escorted down the aisle, taking their seats in the front row. The bride’s mother typically sits in the very first seat.
    • Groom(s) & Groomsmen/Partners: Can enter from the side with the officiant, or walk down the aisle.
    • Bridesmaids/Wedding Party: Usually walk individually or in pairs. Encourage them to walk slowly and leave ample space (about 8-10 feet) between themselves. This allows photographers to capture each person clearly!
    • Flower Children/Ring Bearers: Usually next, often walking together or separately.
    • The Big Reveal – The Bride/Partner 2: The moment everyone’s waiting for! The bride typically walks last, often escorted by one or both parents, or another significant person. Take your time, smile, and soak it all in.
  2. Pacing is Everything:
    • Slow & Steady Wins the Race (and the Photo): Encourage everyone in the processional to walk slowly. Rushing not only looks hurried but makes it incredibly difficult for your photographer and videographer to get good shots.
    • Mind the Gap: Leave about 8-10 feet between each person or pair walking down the aisle. This separation creates beautiful individual moments for photos and allows the focus to be on each person as they enter.
  3. Music Matters:
    • Work with your musicians or DJ to select distinct songs or pieces for different parts of the processional. You might have one song for family/wedding party and a truly special one for your entrance!
  4. Where to Stand:
    • Your officiant will guide you, but generally, groomsmen/partners stand on the groom’s side, and bridesmaids on the bride’s side. Leave enough room for the couple to stand comfortably without feeling cramped.

Pro-Tip from Me:

This is mostly what rehearsals are for….so that attendants know how to walk in, where to stand, what to do with their hands (guys), the ladies know how to hold their flowers, etc.

The Recessional: The Celebration Begins!

Congratulations, you’re married! The recessional is your first joyful walk as a married couple, and it’s all about celebration!

Key Considerations:

  1. The Happy Couple First!
    • You two are always the first to exit! Arm in arm, walk slowly and enjoy the applause. This is your moment to beam and celebrate.
    • The “Kiss at the End of the Aisle”: Many couples love to pause about halfway or at the very end of the aisle for a quick, celebratory kiss. It’s great for photos!
  2. Who Follows?
    • Wedding Party: Often, the wedding party will follow the couple, sometimes paired up (e.g., best man and maid of honor, groomsmen with bridesmaids). They can then proceed to the cocktail hour or a designated photo location.
    • Parents & Grandparents: After the wedding party, your immediate families will exit, followed by other family and guests.
  3. Speed it Up (A Little!):
    • Unlike the processional, the recessional can be a bit more lively! While you don’t need to sprint, it’s okay to walk with a more celebratory pace.
  4. Music Shift:
    • Choose an upbeat, celebratory song for your recessional! Something that makes you want to dance down the aisle.
  5. Exiting the Ceremony Space:
    • Once you exit the main ceremony area, your director will guide you to where you need to be next – perhaps for photos, or just a moment to yourselves before joining the celebration.

Pro-Tip from Me:

Sometimes couples are half-way down the isle before I’ve introduced them. I understand! People are nervous and sometimes just want out. But try to remember to stand there just a few seconds after I introduce you. Smile, let your photog get that great picture, and soak it in.

Final Thoughts:

Your wedding director is your go-to person for lining everyone up and ensuring a smooth flow on the day. However, by having a good understanding of these traditional elements and considering your personal preferences, you’ll feel much more relaxed and ready to enjoy every step of your ceremony!
